\nNew this year\, CRMSS Pacific 2024 will include th e opportunity for keyboard players to explore Renaissance instruments\, hi storical playing styles\, and music of the period with Christina Hutten of the University of British Columbia as instructor. Some of the events we a re planning for participants in Keyboard Day include:
\nWe have extended our application period for ins trumentalists. Applications from players are still being accepted (as of M ay 24).
\nWe are very lucky to be abl e to offer the opportunity for keyboard players to hear and play the follo wing instruments:
\nStudents are welcome to bring Renaissance rep ertoire from all over Europe to work on in masterclasses. Here are a few c omposers to consider: Jehan Titelouze\, Thomas Tallis\, William Byrd\, Orl ando Gibbons\, Peter Philips\, Thomas Weelkes\, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck\ , Arnolt Schlick\, Conrad Paumann\, Paul Hofhaimer\, Elias Nikolaus Ammerb ach\, Marc Antonio Cavazzoni\, Girolamo Cavazzoni\, Andrea Gabrieli\, Giov anni Gabrieli\, Claudio Merulo\, Giovanni de Macque\, Giovanni Maria Traba ci\, Antonio de Cabezon\, or Girolamo Frescobaldi. \nThe activities of Keyboard Day are open to lovers of historical keyboard music of every lev el. All participants will have an opportunity to play the historical keybo ard instruments and participate fully in workshops\, but masterclass slots will be offered on the basis of audition\, arranged after your applicatio n to attend CRMSS Pacific 2024 is successful. In 1938 Casavant Frères of St Hyacinthe\, Québec\, was a warded the contract for a new 3-manual organ of 1760 pipes. The organ its elf was located in the north transept of the church\, formerly the choir g allery\, which was lowered to make room for the instrument\, with a façade designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott — the same architect who designed St James’ Church building. Over the years so me minor changes were made to meet the musical demands of a living church\ , including a new Choir division with three ranks in the west gallery in 1 948\, and a new organ console in 2003. With the addition of the Choir div ision\, the organ now has 33 ranks and just under 2000 pipes. The main or gan is located high on the north gallery of the church – an excellent loca tion\, as the grand sound of this fine Casavant Frères organ is marvellously enhanced by the church’s outstanding acoustic s.

Short term course on the sacred repertoire of J.S. Bach offered at Regent College\, May 22-26\, 2023
\nAs part of its upcoming Summer Program\, Regent College is offering a one-week cou rse under the title\, “The Fifth Evangelist: The Sacred Repertoire of J.S. Bach.” The course will be taught onsite at Regent College (5800 Universit y Blvd.\, corner of University Blvd and Wesbrook Mall on the UBC campus)\, Monday to Friday\, May 22-26\, 8:30 to 11:30 am. It will also be accessib le online.
\nParticipating lecturers are J. Evan Kreider (Professor Emeritus\, Musicology\, UBC)\, Dietrich Bartel (Emeritus Professor of Musi c\, Canadian Mennonite University\, Winnipeg)\, Edward Norman (professiona l organist and recitalist)\, as well as Regent College Professor\, Sven So derlund (coordinator). Edward Norman’s organ recital/lecture will be held at Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church (2733 W. 41st Ave.) on Wednesday morning \, May 24.

e member Isaac Howie has always loved making music. A student of piano and composition since
early childhood\, his musical career has included founding a jazz trio\; c
omposing and performing for concert bands\; publishing electronic music\;
and winning awards for solo piano. He entered the University of British Co
lumbia at 15\, where he currently studies organ under the mentorship of Pr
ofessor Michael Dirk. Alongside his pursuit of a BMus\, Isaac is Organist
at Holy Family Parish in Vancouver\; he holds an ARCT in piano and studies
harpsichord with Alex Weimann. In 2021\, Isaac was division winner of the
Vancouver Chamber Choir’s Young Composers’ Competition. In his spare time
\, Isaac enjoys building computers and translating Ancient Greek texts.

\nMichał Szostak is a graduate of t he Józef Elsner Public School of Music in Warsaw where he specialised in o rgan performance as well as organ improvisation. He took part in organ ma ster classes with Louis Robilliard\, Daniel Roth\, Jean-Claude Zehnder and others\, and organ improvisation sessions with Frédéric Blanc\, Samuel Li égeon\, and Sietze de Vries. Michał the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
\nHe was organis t at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Warsaw for many years\, as well music director and the principal organist at the Sanctuary of the Virgin M ary in Lichen Stary\, where he played the largest organ in Poland\, and he currently teaches at Collegium Civitas and University of Social Sciences in Warsaw.
\nMichał has recorded several CDs and he has an active in ternational concert schedule\, presenting recitals Europe\, the Americas\, Africa and Asia.

Canadian concert organist Aaron Tan is the first organist to ha ve won all three major North American organ competitions\, winning First P rizes at the American Guild of Organists 2018 National Young Artist Compet ition in Organ Performance\, the RCCO’s National Organ Playing Competition \, and the 2021 Canadian International Organ Competition. In partnership w ith the Canadian International Organ Competition\, Aaron will be making hi s Vancouver debut at St. Andrew’s-Wesley on Tuesday\, September 19\, 2023 at 7:00 pm. Come hear this spectacular young organist play at one of the largest organs in our city!

Aaron Tan is a Can adian organist\, engineer\, and pianist. He has won numerous noteworthy contests and scholarships on both instrume nts including First Prize at the 2021 Canadian International Organ Competi tion as well as First Prize and Audience Prize at the prestigious AGO Nati onal Young Artists (NYACOP) competition in 2018. Other competition prizes and awards include the Toronto RCCO Young Organists Competition\, the Osbo rne Organ Competition of the Summer Institute of Church Music (Ontario)\, the RCCO’s National Organ Playing Competition\, the Charlotte Hoyt Bagnall Scholarship for Church Musicians\, the Lilian Forsyth Scholarship\, the W est Chester University Organ Competition\, the Arthur Poister Scholarship Competition\, the Sursa American Organ Competition\, and the XVI Poland In ternational Piano Festival Competition. His primary musical tutelage has b een with John Tuttle\, David Palmer and Joel Hastings.
\nAaron also holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the U niversity of Michigan and worked there as a postdoctoral researcher after earning his degree\, studying polymer thin films.

Marc D’Anjou studied the organ at the Conse rvatory of Music in Rimouski\, Quebec\, graduating in 1986 with first clas s honours awarded unanimously by the jury. He then studied improvisation with Richard Gagné and Rachel Laurin\, and improvisation and French repert oire in Paris with Jean Galard. In 1980 he won the national organ finals in the junior category of the Baldwin Competition in Toronto. He received an honorable mention from the Sir Ernest McMillan Foundation in Toronto i n 1989\, and was also a remarkable finalist at the first Quebec Organ Comp etition in 1992. He is an active concert artist and accompanist\, both in Canada and abroad. In addition to giving solo recitals\, he is often a s oloist with orchestras and ensembles\, including the Quebec Symphony Orche stra. In 1998 he gave a recital and masterclass at Towson University (Bal timore)\; he gave a recital and participated in an improvisation match in Toulouse\, France\, in October 2006\, and toured Ecuador in 2009\, giving five concerts. In September 2011 he accompanied the prestigious Vancouver Chamber Choir in a concert recorded by the CBC. He has given recitals in various churches in Vancouver over the years\, including Holy Rosary Cath edral and Christ Church Cathedral.
\nFrom 1986 to 1992\, Marc D’Anjo u worked in organ building\, for Orgues Marcel Bertrand. During the same period\, he obtained the position of co-organist at the historic church of St-Jean-Baptiste in Quebec City\, and became the principal organ ist there in 1991\, remaining until 1993. In December 1993 he was chosen by competition to be the titular organist at the Quebec City Cathedral-Bas ilica\, where he remained until he moved to Vancouver in May 2010. He was the Music Director (organist\, pianist and choir director) at South Burna by United Church from September 2010 until September 2012\, during which t ime he founded the “Burnaby Chamber Choir” and was its artistic and music director. \nJ.S. Bach’s monumental Orgelbüchlein (BWV 599−644) i s a collection of 46 Lutheran chorale preludes for organ\, spanning the en tire traditional liturgical year. As Bach composed these various chorale p reludes mainly throughout his Weimar appointment from 1708-1717\, the Orge lbüchlein is a showcase of his development as a composer through this earl y period of his career\, as well as the development of the chorale prelude form as a whole. Several of the pieces within the Orgelbüchlein have stoo d as being among the most popular pieces in the organ literature\, with ma ny receiving transcriptions for other instruments (famously\, Ferruccio Bu soni’s transcriptions for solo piano\, and Leopold Stokowski’s transcripti ons for orchestra.) In 1938 Casavant Frères of St Hyacinthe\, Québe c\, was awarded the contract for a new 3-manual organ of 1760 pipes. The organ itself was located in the north transept of the church\, formerly th e choir gallery\, which was lowered to make room for the instrument\, with a façade designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott — the same architect who designed St James’ Church building. Over the years some minor changes were made to meet the musical demands of a livin g church\, including a new Choir division with three ranks in the west gal lery in 1948\, and a new organ console in 2003. With the addition of the Choir division\, the organ now has 33 ranks and just under 2000 pipes. Th e main organ is located high on the north gallery of the church – an excel lent location\, as the grand sound of this fine Casavan t Frères organ is marvellously enhanced by the church’s outstanding acoustics.

Recent highlights include Silent Movie Mondays at the Orpheum\, Widor with New West Symphony Orchestra\, Organ Dedicatio n of St John the Apostle Vancouver\, Rutter’s Gloria at the Chan Centre\, and Mozart’s Requiem with Belle Voci\; he also recently appeared in the se mifinals of the 2nd Feith Orgelwettbewerb in Blieskastel\, Germany\, and t he RCCO National Organ Competition in Toronto. Besides organ\, Isaac is a composer and was division winner of the Vancouver Chamber Choir competitio n in 2021. In his spare time\, Isaac translates Greek texts\, builds compu ters and sells real estate.

What sets Loreto Aramendi ’s concerts apart are the symphonic transcriptions of works by Liszt\, Fau ré\, Rachmaninoff\, and Saint-Saëns. These transcriptions are not simplifi ed arrangements\, but concert versions of great orchestral works which pus h both the instrument and player to the limit. As such\, they show off the rich tonal colours of the organ necessary for interpreting orchestral mus ic\, which are otherwise unheard in strict organ repertoire. As well\, the organ transcriptions require a musician of exceptional virtuosic and arti stic skill – and that Loreto Aramendi has in spades.

\nFollowing this introspection\, Schumann ’s Innig offers an intimate and heartfelt moment\, contrasting wi th the radiant and rhythmically intricate Joie et clarté des corps glo rieux by Messiaen\, which challenges the performer’s command of colou r and timing. The programme concludes with Duruflé’s Suite\, Opus 5\,< /em>where Gregorian chant influences blend seamlessly with Impressionist h armonies\, requiring a refined touch and deep musical sensitivity. Togethe r these selections demand not only technical proficiency but also the expr essive nuance and stylistic awareness necessary to capture their unique ch aracter and emotional depth.
\nManuel Piazza is assistant organist and choir master at St Thomas’s Anglican Church \, in Toronto. He studied organ with Martin Jean\, improvisation with Jeff rey Brillhart\, and choral conducting with Dale Adelmann. He served as sen ior organ scholar at Trinity Church on the Green\, New Haven\, where he wa s mentored by Walden Moore\, and as an organist for Yale Schola Cantorum\, conducted by David Hill.
\nManuel Piazza developed a passion for sa cred music while attending St Michael’s Choir School as a chorister in Tor onto\, Canada. He completed his undergraduate studies in organ performance at the University of Toronto\, where he studied with John Tuttle. Hhe ser ved as choir director and organist at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church\ , organ scholar at Trinity College ( University of Toronto )\, organ schol ar at St James Anglican Cathedral\, and one of five organists of St Michae l’s Cathedral Basilica. From September 2019 to July 2020\, he was organ sc holar at Truro Cathedral in Cornwall\, UK\, where he played for Evensong t hree times a week\, accompanying choristers under the direction of Christo pher Gray.
\nWhilst living in the UK\, he also taught theory and org an and performed with ensembles such as the London Sinfonia. After returni ng to North America\, he won first prize in the 2021 Royal Canadian Colleg e of Organists National Organ Playing Competition and other awards such as the Godfrey Hewitt Memorial Scholarship (RCCO)\, the Mary Baker Scholarsh ip in Organ Accompanying (Yale ISM)\, the Julia R Sherman Memorial Prize f or excellence in organ playing (Yale ISM)\, and the Aidan Kavanagh Prize f or academic achievement (Yale Divinity School).

In this 2.5 hour se ssion\, students will have the opportunity to adapt established keyboard/p iano repertoire or come prepared with an improvisation to a short silent c artoon of their choice\, exploring the wondrous musical palette and novel sound effects of the century-old instrument – all guided in a fun and enco uraging masterclass style by Vancouver Civic Organist\, Michael Dirk.

\n\nAbraham Ross enjoys an active career as a concert organist\, harpsichordist\, and direc tor\, presenting imaginative programmes informed by the most recent resear ch on performance practice\, technology\, and musicological context. His a ccolades include appearances in international competitions\, research gran ts from Quebec’s Fonds de Recherche en Societé et Culture and McGill Unive rsity\, and performances with Resonance Collective (Los Angeles)\, the Orc hestre Symphonique de Montréal\, and Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra. He v alues collaboration with other artists regardless of discipline and has ap peared with various groups across North America\, in Argentina\, and in Eu rope.
\nDrawing on both findings in primary sources and the most rec ent performance science\, Abraham’s repertory ranges from the earliest wri tten sources to music by living composers. His recital programming reflect s his commitment to diversifying the canon of western repertory and regula rly features works of neglected and underrepresented composers. Collaborat ions with living composers enable Abraham to give several national or worl d-premieres each year. He has also given the modern-day premieres of numer ous unfinished\, reconstructed\, and recently discovered works.
\nAb raham’s formative musical studies took place in his hometown of Bangor\, M aine on an 1860 organ by American organbuilders E. & G. G. Hook\, an exper ience that inspired him to take up the organ as a career. He now serves on the board of St. John’s Organ Society\, an organization dedicated to the preservation of that instrument.

\nThe release of their latest CD\, “Canadian Suite Celebrations \,” recorded in the Winspear Centre and published on the Centredisc label in April\, 2024 is officially celebrated with concerts in Edmonton\, Winni peg\, Montreal\, Langley\, Vancouver and in the United States.
\nThe duo is inducted in the Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame\; they are separate ly inaugurated Honorary Fellows of the Royal Canadian College of Organists . Giesbrecht and Segger co-direct the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ national competition committee. As active board members in the Edmonton R CCO Centre\, they plan and organize local concerts and events.
Marnie and Joachim are Music Directors at First Presbyterian Churc h in downtown Edmonton. In addition to conducting weekly rehearsals and se rvices\, they curate organ and choral concerts\, fundraise for refugees\, and support community music making. They take great pride in their two son s\, Mark and Chris\, who rock the world with percussion\, drum set and com position (Mark)\; heavy metal guitar playing in the Juno award winning ban d “Striker” and long-distance running (Chris).

\nDr. Joachim Segger (BMus\, MMus\, Performer’s Certif icate\, Eastman School of Music\; DMus UAlberta) is a versatile musician w ho performs internationally as a piano soloist and collaborative artist. A church organist since the age of nine\, Joachim enjoys improvising at the piano and organ using classical and contemporary musical styles as well a s hymn-based improvisations. Dr. Segger is Professor Emeritus of the Musi c Department at The King’s University\, Edmonton.

\nKeyboard artist Marnie Giesbrecht performs and records as organ soloist\, and collaborative musician (organ\, piano\, har psichord) in mainstream repertoire\, as well as new and early music. The Choir of St. John’s< span class='gmail_default'>\, Shaughnessy will offer the traditional Anglican service of Choral Evensong.
\nOn the Second S unday in Lent\, we take a more subdued approach to our evening service off erings in keeping with the solemn and austere sensibilities of the season. Richard Farrant and Thomas Tomkins work s are highly regarded staples of the English renaissance\, and Hea ley Willan’s renaissance-inspired setting of the canticles draws us further back\, steeped in psalm tone melodies over a thousand years old . Orlande de Lassus was one of the most prolific composer s of the 16th century\, and in his setting of John 5:24\, we hear Jesus’ reassurance that\, though we are surrounded by death\, in him we can have life.
\nCome dee pen your Lenten experience with music spanning the centuries\, drawing us back to the time of the early church\, and meditate on our still broken wo rld that shares so much heaviness and grief with its former self. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 film The Lodger was his first critical and commercial success. This haunting silent thriller tells the tale of a mysterious young man who takes up residence at a Londo n boardinghouse just as a killer known as the Avenger descends upon the ci ty. Accompanied live by organist Koos van Nieuwkoop on the historic Wurlit zer organ.

While we know and love Bach for his cantatas\, orato rios\, concertos\, and chamber music\, he never seems more himself than on the organ. His writings for the ‘king of all instruments’ (W.A. Mozart) o pen the gates to an entire universe of harmony and polyphony\, achieving a degree of freedom impossible for any other instrument\, and allowing for a unique window into Bach’s mind.
\nThe pieces chosen for this recit al on the renowned Pasi organ at the West Vancouver United Church touch on the four pillars of Bach’s organ work: Toccata and Fugue\, Concerto\, Son ata and Chorale Prelude.

The internationally renowned key board artist Alexander Weimann has spent his life enveloped by the therape utic power and beauty of making music. Alex grew up in Munich. At age thre e he became fascinated by the intense magic of the church organ. He starte d piano at six\, formal organ lessons at 12 and harpsichord at university (along with theatre theory\, medieval Latin and jazz piano.) He is in huge demand as a director\, soloist and chamber player\, traveling the world w ith leading North American and European ensembles. He is Artistic Director of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra in Vancouver and teaches at the Universi ty of British Columbia where he directs the Baroque Orchestra Mentorship P rogramme.
\nAlex has appeared on more than 100 recordings\, includin g the Juno-award-winning album “Prima Donna” with Karina Gauvin and Arion Baroque orchestra. His latest album series “The Art of Improvisation” (Vol ume 1: A Prayer for Peace\; Volume 2: Ad libitum\; and Volume 3: Canavian Variations\, released on Redshift\, 2024) unites his passions for both bar oque music and improvisation on organ\, harpsichord\, and piano.
