Prize winner in a number of competitions including the Grand Prix de Chartres and the Canadian International Organ Competition, Jean-Willy Kunz is an exciting and eclectic artist, whose career includes recent performances with the Montreal, Quebec and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, the Cirque du Soleil, Branford Marsalis, the Violons du Roy, and Martha and Rufus Wainwright. As the the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s first organist in residence, he performs both with the orchestra and in concert, and is responsible for the development and showcasing of the Symphony’s new four manual Casavant organ in their home venue: Maison symphonique de Montreal. He is also organ professor at the Montreal Conservatory of Music and artistic director of the Canadian International Organ Competition.

Unfortunately this concert has been cancelled, due to the probable upcoming full bus strike on November 27, 28 and 29. Too many members of the four choirs scheduled to perform depend on public transport and wouldn’t be able to be present.
Christmas carols, anthems, and music for handbells, organ, and other instruments, with the Notre-Dame Handbell Ensemble and Handbell Choir; the Queens Avenue United Church Memorial Bell Ringers, the children’s bell choir, and the Senior Choir; guest organist Marc D’Anjou; organist and music director Rachel Alflatt, and vocal and instrumental soloists.

For many around the world, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College Cambridge, marks the beginning of Christmas. For many of us also, it is something experienced from afar as it is broadcast on TV or radio. If you cannot be in King’s College Chapel this year, your next best option is St James’ Church. The MOTET choir presents the legendary A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of biblical readings and music at St James’ Anglican Church. St James’ is perfect for this traditional Christmas service, as the building is not only visually inspiring, but also acoustically supports the voices of congregation, choir, and organ. Plan to bring your family and friends to this evening to celebrate this most wonderful time of year. This is a free event, though donations will be gratefully accepted to defray expenses. MOTET is marking the 10th anniversary of their first concert by presenting a programme for the Feast of the Chair of St Peter. On this day, they will celebrate the role of St Peter and his successors as the “Vicar of Christ” to the Church on earth. Their concert features music drawn from the First Vespers and Mass liturgies of the feast, including works by English polyphonic master William Byrd, French perfectionist Maurice Duruflé, and their respective contemporaries. There will be two organ solos: Messiaen’s “Apparition de l’église éternelle” performed by MOTET’s director, David Poon, and Mulet’s “Tu es Petra”, played by Michael Molnar.
MOTET is a Vancouver-based chamber ensemble comprised of young musicians passionate about bringing sacred choral music to audiences throughout the region. MOTET draws music from the vast treasury of the Catholic tradition into reverently beautiful concerts and liturgies.
Schedule: 10:00am, Knox United Church; 11:30am, St. John’s Shaughnessy Anglican Church; 12:30pm lunch break, 2:00pm, Central Presbyterian Church.

Denis Bédard has been organist and music director at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver since 2001. He has given recitals across Canada, in the United States, in France and in Brazil and pursues an international career as a composer. His compositions include chamber music, orchestral and vocal music and many organ works. He has received commissions from Radio-Canada, the CBC, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, the RCCO, the RSCM, Monaco Cathedral, and various professional ensembles and musicians in North America and Europe. His works are performed throughout North America and Europe, as well as in Asia, South Africa, Australia and South America, and many have been recorded on CD. His music, essentially tonal and melodic, is characterized by a concern for formal clarity and immediate communication with as vast a public as possible.
Rachel Alflatt has given concerts throughout the province of Quebec, as well as in Ontario, New Brunswick, and British Columbia. She has also performed with the West Coast Symphony, the New Westminster Symphony, the Vancouver Philharmonic, and the Okanagan Symphony, and has recorded for the CBC’s French network, Radio-Canada FM. She is organist and music director at Queen’s Avenue United Church and is active an an organ teacher.
